What You’ll Learn

• Understand what constitutes child maltreatment and be able to identify signs and symptoms of a child who may be subjected to abuse or neglect
• Examine how risk factors, including parent’s mental and physical well-being, make children vulnerable to abuse and maltreatment
• Be able to act as an effective advocate for a child or young person.
• Be clear about your own and colleague’s roles, responsibilities and professional boundaries and remit.
• Draw on child and family-focused clinical and professional knowledge and expertise of what constitutes child maltreatment, to identify signs of sexual, physical, or emotional abuse or neglect
• Identify when and how to refer a child including those suspected of being a victim of trafficking or sexual exploitation, at risk of FGM, having been a victim of FGM or those at risk of being radicalised
• Undertake regular documented reviews of own (and/or team) safeguarding/child protection practice as appropriate to role (in various ways, such as through audit, case discussion, peer review, and supervision and as a component of refresher training
• Document safeguarding and child protection concerns in an appropriate and accurate manner
• Work with other professionals and agencies, with children, young people and their families when there are safeguarding concerns
• Be able to refer to social care or local safeguarding team when necessary
• Analyse the importance of sharing information within a team and throughout the multi-disciplinary team (Recognise the effects of not sharing information and how to address barriers when referring a child or family)
