What You’ll Learn

• Be able to define the terms ‘safeguarding’, ‘abuse’ and ‘child maltreatment’
• Be able to recognise the potential indicators of child maltreatment - physical, emotional, sexual abuse, and neglect including radicalisation, child trafficking and female genital mutilation (FGM).
• Understand the impact a parent/carer’s physical and mental health can have on the well-being of a child or adolescent, including the impact of domestic violence and abuse
• Be able to explain who is responsible for safeguarding children and describe how their role contributes to safeguarding children
• Understand the importance of children’s rights when discussing safeguarding children

• Know what action to take if abuse of a child is suspected and how to raise your concerns
• Be aware of the relevant legislation, local and national policies and procedures
• Explain the importance of and procedures for information sharing
